Under Armour All- America Game Notebook. CHICAGO—The players chosen for Saturday’s Under Armour All- America Game convened Thursday with the first round of the home run derby, then went through the paces of a tools- oriented workout in front of scouts Friday at Illinois- Chicago’s Curtis Granderson Stadium. Two players from each American and National team advanced to Saturday’s derby finals, which likely will include more participants.
Joey Wentz (Shawnee Mission East, Leawood, Kan.) and Will Benson (The Westminster Schools, Atlanta) representing the American and Canadian slugger Andrew Yerzy (York Mills HS, Toronto) and Bo Bichette (Lakewood HS, Tierra Verde, Fla.) earning two National spots. Bichette, the son of ex- big leaguer Dante, set the tone for the afternoon as his bat was ahead of his glove and defense during Friday’s workout. He showed excellent bat speed that helped him overcome a deep back elbow load and arm bar in his swing to hit several long blasts to left- center field. Yerzy had his BP moments as well, and outfielder Hunter Bishop (Serra HS, San Carlos, Calif.) rallied each BP round, showing improvement from the previous round.
Bishop is the younger brother of former Washington Huskies outfielder Braden Bishop, whom the Mariners drafted in the third round in June. The National team also features intriguing shortstop Delvin Perez (International Baseball Academy, Loiza, P. R.), who has a lean, angular 6- foot- 3, 1.
He also showed hand speed in hitting at least one BP homer, and his raw tools should provide intrigue at Wrigley Field. The American team has more power up and down the lineup, from Wentz and Benson to lefthanded- hitting Christian Jones (Federal Way, Wash., HS), who launched several long homers to right- center field, to raw, powerful 6- foot- 3, 1. Thomas Jones (Laurens, S. C.). The American roster also features local product Cooper Johnson (Carmel Catholic HS, Mundelein, Ill.), as well as smooth infielders such as Grae Kessinger (Oxford (Miss.) HS), the grandson of ex- big leaguer Don Kessinger.
Another player to watch Saturday will be A. J. Brown (Starkville (Miss.) HS), who will become the second player (joining Kyler Murray) to play in both Under Armour’s football and baseball All- America games. Brown showed raw ability at the plate Friday but arrived too late for the defensive workouts. He’s uncommitted and considered a four- star wide receiver recruit, with many SEC scholarship offers. The players’ day started with a meeting with MLB’s ambassador for inclusion, ex- big league outfielder Billy Bean, as well as community outreach programs including filling backpacks with school supplies with the Chicago’s Boys & Girls Club, followed by a game of quick ball. Saturday’s events start with the derby at 1.
